Cutter Big Baler           (2.9mb) Hesston Big Baler 4900-4910

It’s been a great winter so far, weather-wise and sales wise.  I hope it keeps coming for a month or so.   The forecasts are for more great wet weather, and the economic forecast is for continued strong farm prices through the year!

Meantime, our big new is that we have just acquired Simmons Equipment and Hardware, located in Terreton, Idaho. Simmons owners Jim Black and Jay Simmons will manage the new Agri-Service location, with Jim heading up the Ag Machinery division and Jay continuing to manage the hardware business.  The purchase was effective on January 31st.

Simmons Equipment and Hardware has been serving farmers and ranchers in Jefferson County and in Eastern Idaho for decades.  The current staff at Simmons will stay employed at Agri-Service, in the same capacities.

With the changing agricultural market, we hope that combining Agri-Service’s strength and size with Simmons Equipment great local reputation, we will be able to better serve all of our customers.  We will be able to sell each other’s inventories, and buy machinery and parts with a volume price and availability advantage. They are already our third largest store. I’m looking forward to our new partnership with Jim and Jay.

The new venture becomes our eighth full service store location for Agri-Service, with five stores in Idaho located at Twin Falls, Burley, Buhl, Weiser, and St. Anthony, plus stores in Logan, Utah and a Nyssa, Oregon. We also have a service facility in Hammett, Idaho.  This new store means that we now employ over 120 full-time employees. What a great group of people!

Agri-Service just received word that for the seventh straight year, we are AGCO Corporation’s largest dealer in North America. It was a great year. The new Hesston baler was a tremendous success.  For the first time, we sold 100 new big balers.  Thanks again to our great crew of service technicians, they are all running great.  Our techs are really world class!

The new schedule for Open Houses and Baler Schools is out, and is in this newsletter.  We have slid the schools in Eastern Idaho back to early May to match their weather and spring work needs. The rest of the schools and open houses are in the first two weeks of March.

We’re planning another big customer group trip to Hesston, Kansas to see the factory and the sites at Wichita next fall.  At the open house, we’ll give away one free trip to a lucky attendee.  If you ask those who went on the last trip, it was a blast. Watch for the details of the trip in a later newsletter.  We’ll also be giving a free “loaded” video iPod to one participant in each of our baler schools.  I’ll personally load it with the winners favorite types of music, plus some movies and TV shows. This should make those long nights of baling (with a baler that just keeps going) a little more entertaining.

Thanks for making 2007 an incredibly successful year for us.  We had a record year for AGCO Hesston equipment sales, over 40 Darf wheel rakes, and over 230 Kubota tractors and RTV’s.   We’re taking advantage of the great year to make some much needed improvements in some of our facilities.

You won’t recognize the Twin Falls headquarters. We finally got a much needed stoplight, but it took away much of our customer parking, so we had to pave a lot of our machinery lot. (Help us out by coming in and buying a used baler and windrower, or two!)  We had to move the front door to the south, and this led to a lot of office remodeling.  It’s gonna be nice. We needed to do it all, and it turned out pretty nice, I think.

We’re in the process of adding onto the crowded shops in Logan and Buhl, and will be adding a building in Burley for storage and machinery assembly.  We’re also looking for a more suitable location in St. Anthony.  Lots of things going on, so please keep those parts, service and machinery purchases coming so we can keep growing.

The new Massey Ferguson tractor is really catching on.  The CVT transmission from Fendt is superior to anything else out there. I gotta get something off my chest, though.  Many of our customers are so enamored with John Deere that they won’t even give this great tractor a chance.  What’s the deal???  JD is a company, not a religion.  Their copy of our CVT transmission has clutches for forward/reverse shuttle, and to switch speed ranges.  Ours has been out for over 15 years, is in tens of thousands of units, and has zero clutches.  Come on, give it a chance.  Many have, and they love those Massey Ferguson tractors. Wait til you see the new cab this fall! Call me, and I can talk you through this silly addiction.
